11. to join

Он, вообще говоря, не относится к базовой лексике, но так как в последнее время всем часто приходится заполнять анкеты, составлять резюме и проходить собеседования (и все это на английском языке), временами приходится говорить что-нибудь вроде "вступил в профсоюз". Так вот, этот глагол вовсе не требует предлога in, как и никакого другого:

The piper's calling you to join him Dear lady,
can you hear the wind blow.3

My, my, my, I'm so happy
I'm gonna join the band.4

12. to laugh и to smile

Смеяться над кем и улыбаться кому требуют одного и того же предлога at:

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar
The little children laugh at him behind his back.1

You tell lies thinking I can't see,
You can't cry 'cause you're laughing at me.2

I smiled at you,
You smiled at me
And we're on our way
No we can't turn back.3

13 и 14. to listen и to wait

О том, каких предлогов требуют to listen (слушать) и to wait (ждать), говорилось уже сверх всякой меры. Тем не менее не только студент X, но вместе с ним и студент Y регулярно забывают о наличии там хоть каких-то предлогов.

Listen. Jesus, I don't like what I see.
All ask is that you listen to me.4

Listen, Jesus, to the warning I give.
Please, remember that I want us to live.5

So please listen to me if you wanna stay mine,
I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind.6

Listen to me one more time,
How can I get through.7

15 и 16. to look и... to look

О том, каких предлогов требуют глаголы to look (смотреть на), и to look (искать), уже тоже говорилось. Студент X, однако, упорно повторяет в первом значении ("смотреть на") - to look on, а во втором значении ("искать") - to find4.

Вот примеры, которые могут вам помочь:

Look at me.
Who am I supposed to be?
Who am I supposed to be? Look at me.5

Well, she looked at me
And I, I could see
That before too long I'd fall in love with her.6

4. Который в действительности означает "находить". Почему-то студент Х никогда не видит разницы между этими глаголами. Вот (дословно) что он сказал однажды: Then I found my key, but couldn't find it. Что, по его мнению, означало: потом я поискал мой ключ, но не нашел его.

6. I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles.

I wonder what went wrong,
